Frequently Asked Questions

What does a private dietitian do?

A private dietitian is a qualified healthcare professional who assesses, diagnoses and manages nutrition-related conditions using evidence-based dietary strategies.

Dietitians work with individuals to improve health outcomes through tailored nutrition plans. This may include managing digestive disorders, metabolic conditions such as diabetes or high cholesterol, weight changes related to illness or hospitalisation, and providing specialist nutrition support for complex clinical situations such as neurological injury, malnutrition, or enteral and parenteral feeding (including nasogastric feeding, PEG feeding and TPN).

In private practice, dietitians typically provide one-to-one consultations, develop personalised nutrition plans and work alongside other healthcare professionals such as GPs, consultants and physiotherapists.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

Most private dietitian consultations do not require a referral, and patients can book an appointment directly.

However, some individuals are referred by their GP, consultant or other healthcare professional when nutrition support is needed as part of managing a medical condition.

In these cases the dietitian may review medical records, blood test results or clinical reports to develop a tailored nutrition plan.

Private consultations are available both in person and via secure online appointments.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

In the UK, the title dietitian is legally protected and dietitians must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Dietitians are trained healthcare professionals who can assess, diagnose and treat nutrition-related medical conditions using evidence-based dietary interventions.

The title nutritionist is not legally protected in the same way, and the level of training can vary significantly.

While many nutritionists provide helpful lifestyle and dietary guidance, only registered dietitians are regulated healthcare professionals qualified to manage clinical nutrition conditions within healthcare settings.
